Diversity and Belonging

Like you, I saw the video and it was awful. There are no words.

I don’t know what to say, but I don’t want to be silent on an issue that is so important.

Our nation has a problem.

I want to talk about change, but I don’t know where to start.

When I think about what Jesus did on the cross, I think about the way He broke down the wall between us and Him. And in His amazing sacrifice, I think about the way He has brought people from all races together to be one as His church.

Christians were never expected to look or act the same – “homogenous” was never the point – the point is belonging. A household where we are loved and celebrated together – a family where our unique perspectives and gifts are being used for the glory of God.

Diversity AND belonging.

These ideals were in God’s plan from the beginning. This is the kind of unity that Jesus wants for His church, and the kind of reconciliation that He wants for the world.

And so, what can Christians do? How can we shine when there’s darkness all around us? Build a bridge and start a conversation. Ask someone with different color skin what their experience has been. And then… listen.

Hear their stories. It’s okay to admit that you don’t understand what it’s like. Sit with them in their sadness. And express that you want to see change too. Dialogue on how you can be a part of that change and take steps toward it.

Build a friendship. Get to know them and celebrate their gifts.

Our nation is broken, and the things we see around us only confirm the reality that we need Jesus… and that we DO need each other. What an opportunity for His Church to shine.
